Organisation

The Generations and Gender Programme has three organisational levels: Governance, Advisory, and Operational levels.

Governance level

The governance level of GGP encompasses the Director, the Consortium Board, and the Steering Committee. These bodies oversee the functioning of the GGP and approve or reject its direction.

Director

The Director is appointed by the Consortium Board and has the authority to act on behalf of the GGP. He/she carries out the day-to-day management of the research infrastructure and is responsible for the implementation of decisions taken by the Consortium Board. The Director chairs the Steering Committee and leads the Central Coordination Team. The Director reports to the Steering Committee and the Consortium Board.

The current director is Anne Gauthier.

Consortium Board

The Consortium Board (CB) is the ultimate decision‐making body of the GGP and meets at least once a year. It decides on essential matters such as content, finances and intellectual property rights. The CB also manages structural changes within the GGP, including, appointing the Director, deciding on the entry and withdrawal of a member of the CB or the GGP Council to/from the research infrastructure, and assigning and dismissing members of the Steering Committee and Advisory Board.

The CB composed of institutions that contribute their resources and expertise to the development, coordination, and promotion of the GGP. Each member institution appoints one authorized representative and one substitute.

Steering Committee

The Steering Committee (SC) breaks the GGP strategy down into day-to-day activities and advises the Director, the Central Coordinator and the Central Coordination Team on emerging issues. The SC further seeks consensus among the members of the Consortium Board and validates the content and timing of GGP communication activities.

The Director chairs the meetings of the SC and reports on its activities to the Consortium Board at least once a year.

The SC has a maximum of five members, including the Director, the Chair of the Consortium Board and, if applicable, the co-Chair, the Chair of the GGP Council, and one or two additional members who are appointed and dismissed by the Consortium Board from among its members.

Advisory level

The advisory level of GGP encompasses the Advisory Board and the Ethics Board.

Advisory Board

The Advisory Board (AB) provides strategic scientific and policy‐related advice to the Consortium Board. The AB meets once a year and gives solicited and unsolicited advice on issues regarding the overall design of the GGP (e.g., vision, new initiatives, work plan), issues related to establishing and maintaining the GGP as a sustainable research infrastructure, and any issues deemed relevant for the GGP by the Consortium Board or by the AB itself.

The AB consists of five to eight experts with a well‐established track record in the scientific and/or policy areas of main importance to the GGP.

Current members:

Ethics Board

The Ethics Board (EB) provides advice on issues related to ethics and data management to the Consortium Board.

Current members:

Operational level

The operational level of GGP encompasses the Central Coordination (Central Coordination Team and Coordinator) and supporting nodes.

Central Coordination

The Central Coordination Team (CCT) is responsible for the daily management of the GGP. Its role includes implementing the governance of the GGP and coordinating technical support for the Consortium Board members in implementing the objectives of the research infrastructure. The CCT is composed of the Director and the operational GGP staff.

The CCT reports to the Central Coordinator, the Steering Committee, and the Consortium Board. The Central Coordinator is the institution that hosts the CCT and is appointed by the Consortium Board from among its members. At present, the CCT is hosted by NIDI-KNAW.

Nodes

Nodes are organisations that provide technical support and services to the Central Coordination Team in implementing part of the GGP objectives. They contribute in kind to central GGP activities and carry out tasks assigned by the Director within the framework of their service agreement.

Current Nodes:

  • BiB - responsible for data and questionnaire support
  • INED - responsible for data documentation and dissemination (via NESSTAR) and for the Contextual Database
  • UNECE - serves as the Secretariat for the GGP Council of Partners and manages the GGP bibliography

Nodes are selected for their expertise and are appointed or dismissed by the Consortium Board upon the proposal of the Director.
