In December 2021, the results of the first Generations and Gender Survey (GGS) in the Republic of Moldova were launched at a major hybrid event in Chisinau. With more than 10,000 respondents from 153 localities, the GGS is the most comprehensive longitudinal demographic survey ever conducted in the country.
As Moldova faces rapid demographic change—population decline, ageing, low fertility, out-migration of the working-age population, and low life expectancy—the GGS provides unique evidence to understand and address these challenges. The launch event brought together high-ranking policymakers, representatives of international and non-governmental organisations, and social scientists to discuss how GGS data can inform strategies for demographic resilience.
Debates focused on family life, fertility behaviour across generations, work–life balance, the distribution of household chores, wellbeing, and gender stereotypes. By providing a detailed portrait of demographic dynamics, the GGS has created a foundation for evidence-based policymaking in Moldova.
