Using GGS to Inform Demographic Strategy in Poland

In Poland, findings from the Generations and Gender Survey (GGS) have directly informed the government’s Demographic Strategy 2040, strengthening evidence-based policymaking in the area of fertility and family policy.

Using the Generations and Gender Survey (GGS), researchers at SGH Warsaw School of Economics have analysed the determinants of childbearing intentions and fertility decisions in conditions of persistently low fertility. Their findings highlighted structural and individual barriers to family formation, including housing conditions, job security, reproductive health, partnership stability, and social norms.

These analyses were explicitly incorporated into Poland’s Demographic Strategy 2040, adopted by the Council of Ministers, where they provided the empirical foundation for diagnosing barriers to family formation and for designing policy measures aimed at supporting individuals in realising their childbearing plans. By embedding GGS findings in its strategic framework, Poland has strengthened the role of evidence in shaping long-term demographic policy.
